A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
