Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
